Beginners Wax Carving Workshop

A two-hour guided class. No experience needed. You will shape, file and texture a custom ring from carving wax, and we take care of the casting and polishing afterwards.

What is included

  • Small classes: capped at 8 participants, so you get personal guidance.
  • All tools and materials: carving wax, files, scalpels, spirit burners and measuring tools.
  • Casting and finishing: your design is cast in sterling silver, with 10g included in the ticket price.
  • Refreshments: tea, coffee and soft drinks during the session.
  • Optional upgrades: gold plating or solid gold casting, available on request at an additional charge.

How the two hours run

  1. Introduction and design idea (15 minutes): an overview of lost-wax casting, a safety briefing and ring sizing.
  2. Rough shaping (15 minutes): sizing the wax and filing the basic profile.
  3. Fine carving and texturing (60 minutes): adding your personal touches, textures, facets or a signet profile.
  4. Final prep and polish (30 minutes): smoothing the edges and preparing your piece for casting.

After the class

Casting involves kiln firing and pouring metal, so your piece cannot be taken home on the day. It is cast in solid sterling silver, hand-finished in our workshop and ready for collection or postal delivery within 2 to 3 weeks.

Questions

Can I take my jewellery home on the day?
No. You carve the wax model in class. We then send it to a specialist foundry to be cast in metal, and polish it by hand in our workshop. It will be ready in 2 to 3 weeks.

What can I make?
Most people carve a custom ring, such as a signet, a textured band or an organic molten ring. For a first class we recommend focusing on form and texture.

Can I cast in gold instead of silver?
Yes. The ticket includes up to 10g of sterling silver. If you would like 9ct or 18ct gold, or a gold-plated silver ring, we weigh your wax model at the end of class and quote the additional cost.

What is the cancellation policy?
Full refunds or free rescheduling are available up to 7 days before your class. Within 7 days, we offer a 50% studio credit, or reassignment if we can fill your place.

Are other dates available, or do you run private events?
Yes. Contact us to find out more.
